Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Admissions 2009

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Delhi invites applications from eligible candidates for admission to the following UG, PG, M.Phil, Ph.D Programmes in various schools

I. SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES
(A) M.PHIL/Ph.D. in : International Politics, INTERNATIONAL Organisation, Diplomacy and Disarmament, Political Geography; International Legal Studies; International Trade and Development; south asian, central asian, southeast asian & southwest pacific studies; chinese, japanese & korean studies; west asian, north african and sub-Saharan African studies; Canadian, united States and Latin American Studies; european studies; and Russian & Central Asian studies.

Eligibility :
(a) For International Politics, International Organisation, Diplomacy & Disarmament and Political Geography: Master's degree in Political Science, History, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Defence/Strategic Studies, International Relations and Area Studies with at least 50% marks or Master's degree in Humanities and other Social Sciences with at least 60% marks or Master's degree in Natural Sciences with at least 65% marks.

(b) For International Legal Studies: LL.B. (Three Year) degree after Bachelor's degree with at least 55% marks or an LL.B. (Five year) degree with at least 55% marks in the aggregate or an M.A. with International Law as one of the subjects with at least 55% marks in the aggregate or an LL.M. degree with at least 50% marks in the aggregate.

(c) For International Trade & Development: Master's degree in Economics with at least 50% marks and familiarity with Mathematics and Statistics up to Bachelor's level.

(d) For South Asian, Central Asian, Southeast Asian & Southwest Pacific Studies: Master's degree in Political Science, History, Economics, Geography, Sociology, Defence Studies, International Relations and Area Studies with at least 50% marks or Master's degree in Humanities and other Social Sciences with at least 60% marks or Master's degree in Natural Sciences with at least 65% marks.

(e) For Canadian, US and Latin American Studies: Master's degree in Political Science, History, Economics, Sociology, Defence/Strategic Studies, International Relations with at least 50% marks or Master's degree in Natural Sciences with at least 60% marks.

(f) For all other Disciplines: Master's degree in Political Science, History, Economics, International Relations and Area Studies with at least 50% marks or Master's degree in Humanities and other Social Sciences with at least 60% marks or Master's degree in Natural Sciences with at least 65% marks.

(B) M.A. in : Politics (with specialization in International Relations)
Eligibility : Bachelor's degree in any discipline under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 50% marks.

(C) M.A. in : Economics (with specialization in World Economy)
Eligibility : Bachelor's degree in Economics(with either Mathematics or Statistics as a subject)/Mathematics/Statistics/Physics/Engineering under 10+2+3 (or equivalent) pattern of education with at least 50% marks in aggregate.

II. SCHOOL OF LANGUAGE, LITERATURE AND CULTURE STUDIES
(A) M.Phil./Ph.D. in : french, german, arabic, russian, persian, Chinese, Urdu, Hindi, Tamil, hindi Translation, english, linguistics, japanese AND spanish.
Eligibility :
(i) M.Phil./Ph.D. in Languages/Subjects other than English, Linguistics and Hindi Translation: Master's degree in the concerned language/subject with at least 50% marks.

(ii) M.Phil./Ph.D. in English: Master's Degree in English or Linguistics or Sociology or History or Political Science or Philosophy or Folklore or Film & Communication Studies or Culture Studies or Comparative Literature with at least 50% marks.

(ii) M. Phil/Ph.D. in Linguistics: Master's Degree in Linguistics or Psychology or Sociology or Folklore or Culture Studies or any Language or M.Sc. in Speech & Hearing or Computer Science Engineering or MCA with at least 50% marks.

(iv) M. Phil/Ph.D. in Hindi Translation: Master's degree in Hindi with 50% marks and English or any Indian language as one of the subject at B.A. level other than Hindi or Master's degree in any Indian/ Foreign language with 50% marks and Hindi as one of the subject at B. A. level.

(B) M.Phil. in Portuguese
ELIGIBILITY : Master's degree in Portuguese with at least 50% marks or Master's degree in any other Romance Language (Italian, Spanish, French, Romanian) or in English with at least 50% marks and an Advanced Diploma in Portuguese with at least 50% marks.

(C) M.A. in: arabic, chinese, English, french, german, hindi, Japanese, KOREAN, linguistics, persian, russian, spanish and urdu.
Eligibility : Bachelor's degree in any discipline under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 45% marks with adequate proficiency in the concerned language.

(D) B.A. (HONS.) in : arabic, chinese, french, german, japanese, korean, persian, russian and spanish (with entry points TO both 1st and 2nd Year).
Eligibility : (ia) For B.A. (Hons.) : (1st Year) : Senior School Certificate (10+2) or equivalent examination with at least 45% marks.
(ib) Certificates of Alimiah and Molvi issued by some Madrasas have also been recognised as equivalent to 10+2 for admission to B.A. (Hons.) 1st year only provided that the candidates have secured at least 45% marks. Names of the Madrasas are detailed in the Prospectus 2009-10 and are also notified on JNU website www.jnu.ac.in.
(ii) For B.A. (Hons.) : (2nd Year) : First year of Bachelor's degree or an examination recognised as equivalent thereto with at least 45% marks under 10+2+3 pattern of education with adequate proficiency in the concerned language.

III. SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES
(A) M.Phil./PH.D. Programme is offered by the following Centres which have their curricular and research work organized on interdisciplinary basis with a focus on some major problems of study:
Centres : Economic Studies and Planning ; Historical Studies; Political Studies; Regional Development (Geography, Economics and Population Studies); Social Systems (Sociology); Educational Studies (Psychology, Sociology, Economics and History of Education); Social Medicine and Community Health; Philosophy and Studies in Science Policy.

Eligibility :
(a) For Centre for Studies in Science Policy: Master's degree in Social Science or Humanities or Law or Management with 55% marks or Master's degree in Natural Sciences or Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology or Medicine with 60% marks.

(b) For Centre of Social Medicine & Community Health: Master's degree in Sociology, Psychology and Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, History/Social Work, Geography, Population Studies, Public Administration, Nutrition and other relevant Applied Science and Social Science subjects with 50% marks.

(c) For all other Centres: Master's degree in the subject concerned with at least 50% marks or Master's degree in allied subjects or Humanities with at least 55% marks or Master's degree in Natural Sciences with at least 60% marks.

(B) M.Phil./Ph.D. (Master of Public health)
Eligibility : mbbs Degree with atleast 50% marks and atleast one year's work experience after internship; or M.Sc. Degree in Nursing with atleast 50% marks and atleast one year's experience in Community Health Nursing.

(C) M.A. in : Economics, geography, History, political science and sociology
Eligibility : (a) For M.A. in History, Political Science, Geography and Sociology: Bachelor's degree in any discipline under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 45% marks. (b) For M.A. in Economics: Bachelor's degree in any discipline under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 50% marks, and Mathematics either at 10+2 level or at Bachelor's level, either as subsidiary or as honours.

IV. SCHOOL OF LIFE SCIENCES
(A) M.PHIL./PH.D. in areas of interdisciplinary research in molecular Biology, genetic engineering, plant biotechnology, genetics, developmental biology, cell biology, immunology, neurobiology, microbiology, radiation and cancer biology, bio-physics and structural biology.

Eligibility : M. Sc. or equivalent degree, with at least 55% marks or equivalent grades, in Biological Sciences, Bioinformatics or Physical Sciences, as well as to those with M.B.B.S or M. Tech. or M. Sc. (Agriculture) or M. Sc. (Veterinary Sciences) degree with 55% marks. Candidates having the M. Sc. or equivalent degree in allied subjects of Life Sciences, including Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Botany, Genetics, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Zoology, or in Chemistry or Physics are also eligible.

(B) M.Sc. in life sciences : An integrated interdisciplinary programme in Modern Biology.
Eligibility : Bachelor's (B. Sc. or B Tech or equivalent) in Biological, Physical or Agricultural Sciences under the 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 55% marks.


V. SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
(A) M.PHIL./PH.D. in environmental sciences including interdisciplinary areas of biology(Ecology, biotechnology, biophysics, bioremediation), chemistry (Air, Water, Soil pollution), geology and physics.
Eligibility : M.Sc. degree or equivalent in any branch of basic or applied science or MBBS or B.Tech./B.E. with minimum 55% marks.

(B) M.Sc. in environmental sciences : an interdisciplinary course with environmental orientation, drawn from relevant areas of biological, chemical, earth and physical sciences.
Eligibility : Bachelor's degree in any branch of basic or applied science under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 55% marks.


VI. SCHOOL OF COMPUTER & SYSTEMS SCIENCES
The school offers academic programmes leading to the degrees in computer science and technology

(A) M.phil./ph.d. & m.tech/ph.d.
Eligibility : Master's degree in Computer Science or Mathematics or Statistics or Operational Research or in any branch of Science or Bachelor's degree in any branch of Engineering or Master of Computer Applications (MCA) with at least 55% marks.

(B) M.C.A. (master of computer applications) : 3 year programme open to candidates with adequate competence in mathematics.
Eligibility : Bachelor's degree in any discipline with adequate competence in Mathematics under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 55% marks.


VII. SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES
(A) Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D. in physical sciences/Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D. in Chemical sciences. the emphasis is on topics of Chemical Physics, Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry, Computational Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Disordered Systems, Granular Materials, Mathematical Physics, Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, Nonlinear Dynamics, Probability Measure, Quantum Chaos, Quantum Optics, Statistical Nuclear Physics, and String Theory. Experimental areas include Complex Fluids, Supra-molecular Chemistry, Materials Science, Superconductivity, Magnestism, Nonlinear Optics, Semiconductors, Polymers and Nanoparticle Physics, and Ultrafast Photophysical Processes in Bio and Nano-materials.
Eligibility :M.Sc. degree in Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics, with at least of 55% marks. Candidates having majored in Physics or Chemistry should have had Mathematics at least up to the B.Sc. level. Candidates majoring in Chemistry should have specialization in Organic/Inorganic/Physical Chemistry/Chemical Physics at the Master's level. Exceptions can be made in case of applicants with B.Tech. (Electronics/Electrical) degrees provided they successfully qualify the entrance examination.

(B) M.Sc. in Physics
Eligibility : Bachelor's degree (with Physics as one of the subjects) under the 10+2+3 pattern of education with 55% marks in the aggregate (or in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics combined), or in Physics Honours.

VIII. SCHOOL OF ARTS & AESTHETICS

(A) M.Phil./Ph.D.: The School offers M.Phil./Ph.D. programme in three different streams - Visual Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies and Cinema Studies. (Admission to the M.Phil./Ph.D. is through a separate entrance examination for each discipline followed by a viva-voce.)
Eligibility : Master's degree in any discipline with at least 50% marks.

(b) M.A. in Arts & Aesthetics: The School offers M.A. programme with cross disciplinary study of the Visual, Cinematic and Performing Arts.
Eligibility : Bachelor's degree under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 50% marks.

IX. SCHOOL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
(A) Pre-Ph.D/Ph.D in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
Eligibility : (a) Master's Degree in any branch of Sciences such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Computer Science/MCA. (b) MBBS or BHMS or equivalent degree as recognized by Government Council such as MCI. (c) B.Tech or B.E. or equivalent degree in any branch of Engineering, B.Pharm degree or equivalent.Common to all three categories is a minimum requirement of 55% marks.

(B) M.Tech. in computational and systems biology
Eligibility : (a) Master's Degree in any branch of Sciences including Biological, Chemical, Mathematical, Physical, Statistics, Computer Sciences/MCA. (b) MBBS or BHMS or equivalent degree as recognized by Government Council such as MCI. (c) B.Tech. or B.E. or equivalent degree in any branch of Engineering, B.Pharm degree or equivalent. Common to all three categories is a minimum requirement of 55% marks and Mathematics till class XII is compulsory.

X. SCHOOL OF BIOTECHNOLOGY
Pre-Ph.D./ph.d. in areas of Gene Transfer and Expression in Eukaryotic system, Transcription Control and Gene Regulation, Protein Engineering, Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases, Molecular Immunology, Protein folding and Stability, Optimization of Recombinant Protein Production, Structural Biology & Molecular Bioinformatics, and Biochemical Engineering, Molecular virology, cancer biology, molecular cell biology.
Eligibility : Master's Degree in Biotechnology, Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Chemistry or any branch of Biological Sciences with at least 55% marks.

XI. CENTRE FOR SANSKRIT STUDIES
(A) M.Phil./Ph.D. in Sanskrit
Eligibility : Master's degree in Sanskrit or in an allied subject (with Sanskrit up to B.A. level) with at least 55% marks.

(B) M.A. in Sanskrit
Eligibility : Bachelor's Degree in Sanskrit or in any other subject under 10+2+3 pattern of education with at least 45% marks.

XII. CENTRE FOR MOLECULAR MEDICINE
Pre-Ph.D/Ph.D in Areas of Metobolic Disorders, Infectious and non-infectious Diseases, Diagnostics and MOLECULAR ENDOCRINOLOGY
Eligibility : Master's degree of recognized University/Institution in any branch of biological sciences/MBBS/BVSc./B.Pharm. with at least 55% marks.

XIII. CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF LAW AND GOVERNANCE
M.Phil./Ph.d. in Law and Governance
Eligibility : Master's degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Economics, Sociology, History, Philosophy or Law with 50% marks; or 60% in any branch of natural science.
The University will hold Entrance Examination on May 15, 16, 17 and 18, 2009 for admission to various full-time programmes of study at the following 51 cities : Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Allahabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhubaneshwar, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Delhi, Gangtok, Guwahati, Goa, Gorakhpur, Gwalior, Hyderabad, Imphal, Indore, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Katihar, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Pant Nagar, Patna, Pondicherry, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Secunderabad (A.P.), Shillong, Shimla, Silchar, Siliguri (Distt. Jalpaiguri), Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur, Varanasi, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam. In addition, the University will hold entrance examination at Kathmandu (Nepal). (The University reserves the right to change/cancel any centre of examination without assigning any reason.)

GENERAL INFORMATION

Foreign Nationals: All foreign nationals present in India are required to appear in the Entrance Examination subject to their fulfilling minimum Eligibility requirements as prescribed for Indian students as indicated under Category 'A' above. However, in the event of their selection, they will be considered for admission subject to equivalence of their degrees as per Eligibility requirements.

Reservation of seats : Upto 22.5 per cent (15% for SC and 7.5% for ST) of seats are reserved for SC/ST candidates respectively in all programmes of study. 3% seats are reserved for Physically Challenged (Handicapped) candidates (with a minimum of 40% disability) in each category i.e. General, SC, ST and OBC. All SC, ST and Physically Challenged (Handicapped) candidates who have passed and/or are appearing in the qualifying examination are eligible to appear in the entrance examination irrespective of their percentage of marks. 27% seats are reserved for OBC candidates (non creamy layer) subject to availability of sufficient infrastructure.

Besides, all candidates who have passed qualifying examination prescribed for admission to the concerned programme of study from the identified backward districts, will be eligible for deprivation points. All Kashmiri migrants and wards/widows of certain categories of Defence Personnel will be eligible for deprivation points subject to their submitting a documentary evidence of their status (For details, refer to Chapter V of Prospectus). All female candidates are also eligible for deprivation points. Only those candidates will be eligible for deprivation points as stated above who seek admission through Entrance Examination.

Please note that: There is a different Application Form for each Category i.e. Category 'A' and Category 'D' (Admission through Entrance Examination), Category 'B' (Direct Admission to Ph.D. programmes) and Category 'C' (Admission of JRF holders). Candidates should therefore clearly indicate on the self addressed envelope, the Category for which the Application Form is required by them.

For admission through Entrance Examination under Category-A above and Certificate of Proficiency (Part-Time Programme) under Category-D above, candidates can opt upto a maximum of three Fields of Study in a single Application Form for the same level of Programmes i.e. COP(Part-Time) or B.A. (Hons.) (1st Year) or M.A./M.Sc./MCA or M.Phil/Ph.D.,Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D.,M.Tech./Ph.D.,M.P.H./Ph.D., and are not required to submit separate Application Forms. In case a candidate submits more than one Application Form for the same level of programmes of study, his/her candidature will be rejected. However, this restriction will not apply to candidates who apply for Direct Admission to Ph.D. programme under Category-B above, JRF holders to M.Phil./Ph.D. and Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D. programmes under Category-C above and Diploma/Advanced Diploma of Proficiency (Part-Time Programmes) under Category-D above. Candidates are required to submit separate Application Form for each Field of Study for admission to B.A. (Hons.) 2nd Year under category A above, Direct Admission to Ph.D. programme under Category-B above, JRF holders to M.Phil/Ph.D. and Pre-Ph.D./Ph.D. under Category-C above and for Diploma and Advanced Diploma (Part-Time) programmes under Category-D above.

How to apply :
Sets of Application Form and Prospectus can be obtained (i) either personally from the Counter in the Administrative Block of the University on cash payment of Rs. 200/- per set from 10.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. on all working days (Monday to Friday); or (ii) through post by sending crossed Bank Draft (valid for six months) for Rs. 300/- drawn in favour of Jawaharlal Nehru University payable at New Delhi alongwith a self-addressed (unstamped) envelope of the minimum size of 30 cms X 25 cms. clearly indicating the Category for which the Application Form is required on the self-addressed envelope to the Deputy registrar (admissions), Room No. 28, Administrative Block, jawaharlal Nehru university, new delhi-110067. Candidates seeking Application Form and Prospectus from Nepal are required to send a bank draft of Indian Rs.400/- or equivalent in US Dollars. Money Orders and Cheques are not accepted. Please do not send your request through private courier services.

Note
1. Candidates who are due to appear in respective qualifying examination prescribed for Eligibility for admission to a particular programme are also eligible to appear in the entrance examination. In the event of their selection, they will be admitted only if their results of the qualifying examination are declared before 14th August, 2009 and they fulfil the minimum Eligibility requirements as prescribed in the prospectus.

2. The University does not offer correspondence courses.

3. While the University, on its part, shall ensure timely dispatch of Application Forms soon after receipt of the request from intending candidates, it will, however, not accept responsibility for any postal delay or irregularity or loss in postal transit.

4. Any dispute with regard to any matter relating to admission shall be subject to the jurisdiction of Delhi Courts only.
